Hi, I'm Emmanuela!
I was born and raised in Haiti, but at the tender age of 12, the 2010 earthquake forced my family to settle in Canada. I was the only member of my family who knew English, as such, I had the huge responsibility of translating essential services to them.
As soon as we landed in Canada, I started translating for my parents to the immigration officers. I remember feeling overwhelmed because English wasn't my first language; however, I powered through as my family's future depended on it.
Learning On The Go
Apart from my uncle assisting my family when he could, we did not have anyone else to help us integrate into our new environment. As the oldest child, I felt the heavy burden of being the one to step up in providing the necessary translations for official documents and essential services.
As time went on, I found myself translating and creating resumes and cover letters for all of my family members so that they could find their first place of employment in Canada. Ultimately, helping my family adapt and grow in this new culture has encouraged me to improve my English and linguistic skills.

Being Someone's Solution
Looking back at my life, I faced many challenges, but it has made me the woman that I am today. Now, I can fluently speak, read, and write Haitian Creole, French, and English. I am also in the midst of learning American Sign Language and Spanish. I believe that I need to use these linguistic giftings to be a mouthpiece to those who can’t speak English residing in Canada, allowing them to thrive in their environment by providing the essential services that they need.
